How Taxes Actually Work

The raise myth, debunked
"Getting a raise pushed me into a higher bracket, so I took home less" — this is genuinely not how Canadian tax brackets work, and it's one of the most common financial misunderstandings out there.
Canada uses marginal tax brackets. That means only the portion of income inside a higher bracket gets taxed at that higher rate — not your whole income. If a raise pushes $2,000 of your income into a higher bracket, only that $2,000 gets taxed at the higher rate. Every dollar you were already earning keeps being taxed exactly the way it was before. A raise can never shrink your take-home pay overall. The myth almost always comes from confusing the marginal rate (the rate on your next dollar) with the average rate (what you actually pay overall, which is always lower).
